Salmon Fishing in Alaska With Friends Off Juneau

Salmon Fishing In Alaska.

For me, Salmon fishing in Alaska came to fruition when brother in law Ted arranged with friends and work colleagues in Juneau to put us up and introduce us to fishing in the basin. The scenery and setting in Juneau is stunning and when I hinted a look around town would be nice, the reply came, what do you want to do that for, lets go fishing.

A half hour cruise in two 18 foot skiffs or dinghies into part of Alaska’s inland waterways, we dropped our gear over the side and started trolling at various depths. Bait of sprats or herrings threaded onto hooks was simple but worked a treat. Our skiffs were comfortable enough, basic and fundamental and were as productive as any of the larger, fancy very expensive looking rigs crewed by similar looking folk, that trolled the waterways.

Within an hour or two, who counts when ones fishing, we had adequate beautiful fat king salmon between us to call it a day. Back at dock a fisheries guy politely asked if he could take the heads to recover tags if any. He went on to mention that only one in a thousand king salmon caught were from wild stock, or had no tags, this I found rather interesting as I was led to believe the huge salmon fishery of the Alaskan Basin was a natural resource. None the less the hatcheries and reseeding programs appear to be sustainable at the time of my visit anyway.

The next day we all cruised south on another colleagues work boat again trolling for kings with a little less success but the trip and scenery to me was majestic to say the least. So much so in fact, on the second day fishing seamed incidental.

I remain indebted and humbled to those wonderful folk that freely shared their time and resources and indeed their home with me during my visit to Juneau.
